One of my major projects this year was helping update the Aurora Awards website (the Aurora’s are Canada’s SF/F fan-voted awards). I’d like to say it was because I am SOOOOO selfless, but really, I won an Aurora last year and I wanted the website to present a professional appearance (something that looked like it was from geocities doesn’t really give the award much clout) plus a lot of people were frustrated with the nomination/voting application.

…servers. As my faithful readers will note (all three of you), I had stopped posting. The reason was simple — my server was so slow and ponderous that it actually was painful for me to post anything. So, Brian let me come over to his server. So we packed up the ole WordPress and unpacked it at the new server.  Much faster, much more efficient.

I found my harddrive. Seems it ended up in the Girl’s playdough basket. Um, yeah. But still, ever since I lost it, I realized I needed a NEW backup solution. The external harddrive, while convenient at times, had its limitations. Most obvious — it was a single source. In other words, unless I backed it up constantly, if anything happened to it, I was screwed.

I upgraded to WordPress, an open source content management tool (think Firefox, Linux, or Open Office for blogging). It took a while to import the old database (MS-Access) and it wasn’t completely accurate (some of the comments were lost, as were accompanying photos). Read more…
