Maw of Defiler Artwork

June 18th, 2006

Check out the cover artwork for Maw of the Defiler — which will soon be available from my online store called Black Swan Publishing. If you want to get a sneak peak, go : here. It’s in the preliminary stages…but soon you’ll be able to get all 5 of my books, online, and mostly free (download the first 75% for free!).

If I’m going to be selling my books online, they definately need some artwork to finish off the package. Tried to go with a dark theme (there’s some dark imagery in this novel) so we went with blacks and reds — with no picture in clear focus to convey the confusion of Maw.

The tagline…What if the man charged with leading the armies of man against the Ancient Enemy was unknowingly a weapon built for one purpose – the complete and total destruction of humankind?

Wanna Free Book (well, 75% of one)?

June 13th, 2006

I had this great idea (aka, I stole it from someone else). It’s going to make me rich and famous (okay, it won’t).

I’m going to start offering my books online. Free…mostly. The first 75% is free. After that, you have to pay a huge fee of $7 for the remaining 25%.

It’s a pretty simple setup, actually. I’ve registered the following domains:

MawOfTheDefiler.com
SonsofBlasphemy.com
ExperienceNathaniel.com
HungeroftheWolves.com

Each will be a quick portal back here (to RyanMcFadden.com) where the books can be purchased.

I’ll get an e-commerce store up and running….

I might even make $7!

6? 6? My laziness has foiled me again!

June 13th, 2006

Or maybe not laziness. Perhaps I’m just too naive.

Every year, I trundle off to Chapters to pick up my copy of Writer’s Market. I flip through it, find the publishers currently accepting new, unagented writers specializing in fantasy, and send off my query letters.

Most are never returned. Those that do return, usually are clever form letters without even a date.

So this year, I took to the web to see who was really interested.

What the…a gambling publisher? But it says here in Writer’s Digest: Specializes in Fantasy (hmmm, maybe fantasy and gambling do go hand in hand).

Let’s look for the next one…crap. They’re closed.

All right, no need to get discouraged. How about you…oh, seems that they only accept submissions on the 3rd Friday of July. Well that won’t do.

Let’s see…10th entry — ah yes, what’s that fine print on their website say? Oh, seems that they only do comic books.

21st entry: Please, please, please don’t send us submissions. Writers Digest has it all wrong! We don’t even publish fiction.

So, fingers raw from typing, I look at my list.

Six.

Six publishers. The six biggies that no one has a hope in hell of getting to. You know the names: Tor, Daw, Wizards, Penguin, Putnam.

Meh.

Writer’s Digest sucks.

Banff??

June 13th, 2006

There’s this awesome writing convention in Banff in September. Robert Sawyer is going to be a mentor and it’s a great opportunity to get a whole lotta face time with one of the industry giants.

Yeah, except maybe I should’ve put a little more time into my application. Who know it was being graded? Who knew it was like a pop quiz? Who knew?

So I sent forth some drek about goals, and aspirations, and inspirations, and some other stuff. Here’s hoping my ‘work in progress’ (yes, that’s correct, I sent a work in progress) has enough merit to get me in.

If you’re like me, don’t hold your breath.
